Mount Airy Presbyterian Church

Fairmont Missions 2008!

Fairmont Missions is about relationships

...relationships with the Mt. Airy Presbyterian church family, relationships with other Christians serving at Fairmont, and relationships with the families and neighborhoods we serve.  God truly blessed the mission team this year in all three ways.

The Bock family consisted of Tonya, her son Bradley, daughters Laura and Dani and mom, Esther, and was probably the neediest family the team has ever served.  Thanksgiving of last year, their trailer caught on fire.  It was partially rebuilt by Tonya’s brother Wesley and a neighbor, but was barely livable.  MAPC team roofed and sided the home, rebuilt the deck, finished the bathroom, re-plumbed the septic, bath and kitchen, taped, mudded and painted the bare drywall, laid new subflooring and linoleum in the main room and bath, added kitchen cabinets and counters, and cleared the yard of the debris from the fire.  During the building process the team got to know Tonya, her children, her mother, her brother and sister-in-law, her neighbors and her friends.  The team asks for prayer that these relationships would continue, be built up, and that the Holy Spirit would work through those relationships and make new believers of those they met.

Relationships that were begun last year during Vacation Bible School were continued again and new ones made.  Last year the VBS team had four children.  This year those same four attended and God provided eight to nine more.  God’s hand was at work building those relationships and allowing the team to share the gospel and God’s love.

MAPC Team was privileged to serve with eight other churches during the week as well as familiar and unfamiliar Mission to the World staff members.  Additionally, there were three MAPC team members from other (out-of-area) churches.  Relationships were built during the week that encouraged and strengthened the team.  What a privilege it is to see God at work in other churches and other parts of the nation.  One of the teams came from just outside New Orleans.  They testified that they felt so strongly about the Christians who come to help there that they wanted to give something back elsewhere, and so came to Fairmont to do just that.

Finally, the relationships built among the team members are a lasting testament to God’s grace.  Under difficult circumstances the team drew together and worked together, showing and sharing God’s love with those God put in their path.
