A HISTORY

OF

MT. AIRY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Mt. Airy Presbyterian Church's history is a story of God's faithfulness and provision. It begins in the early 1990's, when there were about 10 families from the four-county area who were driving to Gaithersburg to Shady Grove Presbyterian Church (PCA) each Sunday for worship. These families had a vision for a reformed Presbyterian Church in this area. In a step of faith, Shady Grove agreed to plant our church at the same time that they were beginning their building program.

Providentially, God had supplied a pastoral intern by the name of Dave Durant, who was working full time while finishing his seminary education. God led us to the "Phones For You" campaign which involved making 10,000 phone calls to area homes inviting them to church. On March 1, 1992 our first service was held at Mt. Airy Middle School.

We continued to meet at the middle school until 1995, when it became clear that we would have to move. God led us to the old Church of God building just north of Damascus. In July of 1995 we became a particular church, and the following year called and ordained Dave Durant as our pastor.

In June of 1997 we received notice that the Church of God was being sold and we would again have to find a new home. Without missing a Sunday, we were able to move to Lisbon, MD and rent the old Liberty Baptist Church Building. God has led us to purchase property along Old Frederick Road, just east of Mt. Airy town, and in His providence we hope to begin work on a building of our own.

Our congregation continues to grow, both in numbers and in spirit. We are currently seeking a Youth Director to lead our growing population of middle and high school kids. We have Bible Study/Fellowship Groups meeting during the week in Mt. Airy, Lisbon, Monrovia/New Market and Frederick. Finding strength in the love and grace of our Lord Jesus, we continue to seek new opportunities to serve God in our community as we trust in His provision for all our needs.
